A great librarian is like the Elephant's Child - never losing 'satiable
curtiosity. (If you don't know about the Elephant's Child, here's a link:

While this is obvious for a reference or youth services librarian,
catalogers and acquisitions librarians have a sense of it too. Catalogers
decide how to form a MARC record from something that doesn't fall within
the realm of normal materials. See: http://tinyurl.com/334bev (It's a
record I cataloged some years ago when I worked on cataloging the sports
library at the Amateur Athletic Foundation.) Acquisitions librarians
frequently have to be sleuths to track down something the collection needs.
(Interlibrary loan staff have to be the same kind of detective.)
The greatest satisfaction I get is when a client needs information s/he
thinks will be hard to find and I pull the response out from behind the
woodwork.

> I am a new library student and I am fairly certain that I have chosen the
right career path. However, I would like to know if I have what it takes
for a successful career in librarianship. Will you tell me, in your
opinion, what makes a great librarian?
