Hi Michelle,
At my previous library, we had two book clubs going
for the same purpose that you're suggesting. We had
one group that met at the library at 7:30 pm and
another that met at a nearby retirement community at
10:30 am (one on Tuesday, the other on Thursday).
Everyone read the same book. We belonged to a
consortium of 72 libraries, so generally we didn't
have a problem finding enough copies for everyone
(actually, one of the criteria in our book selection
was whether or not enough copies were owned in our
system. We usually requested about 30, if I'm
remembering correctly).
I really enjoyed having the two groups--we would often
have very different discussions! This also added an
extra angle to the second group because I was able
to bring up points that the first group had made
(frequently sending us off on some wild tangents! It
could get controversial). It was fascinating to see
how differently a book would be interpreted, and
interesting to see the unique perspectives of
different generations.
If it's feasible for you to get enough copies of a
book, I would definitely give this idea a try! Best
of luck.
