My daughter was five and I was working for Borders when the first HP came
out, so we read it together, taking turns reading a few pages a night. It
took us the entire summer to read that book, but she loved it. I could
understand why it was so popular, but I had no desire to ever read HP again.
When the next book came out, I told her she was on her own and she has read
every book at least two or three times.
When the first movie came out, my husband decided he wanted to read it, but
he prefers audio books. I brought it home and ended up listening with him.
I have never been a fan of audio books, my mind wanders too much so I
usually end up missing most of the plot, but Jim Dale hooked me. Big time.
I have listened to every book since, waited in line at midnight at my local
Borders to get the new book, both hardcover for my daughter, and on CD for
my husband and I. Due to some technical difficulties - my CD player is
acting hinky - we are only on chapter 4.
Someone mentioned that if you are not a fan of fantasy or science fiction,
then HP probably isn't for you. I disagree. I think the appeal of the
books is that there is something for everyone. Yes, there is fantasy, but
there is also a coming of age story, a dysfunctional family story, several
mysteries, tons of suspense, lots of action and adventure and even a touch
of romance.
The closest thing that I could recommend to HP fans who are adults would be
the Diana Gabaldon Outlander series. Which is worlds different, of course,
but still has a lot of the same appeal factors.
