Well, self check is not "card or nothing", because that would not be
good service. It would be the cheapest service, it would be minimal
service, it would be easiest on staff service, but it would not be
good service.
We always accept IDs, since a library card is not much more that a
certification that we once checked your ID. Despite this, we still
manage to do 80% of our circ self check/self renewal and only 12-15%
at our service desk. Patrons will use self check if at all possible,
since it is faster and easier.
As for key chain cards, they don't work on many self checks so we
ditched them. Patrons realized that using them slowed them down,
since they couldn't use the self checks.
