I don't recall seeing anything posted in response to these 2 questions but I may have missed it and, if so, I apologize for any repetition.

Besides investigating what your state library agencies might offer for new buildings or major renovations to existing buildings, I'd recommend contacting some of the major corporations that have been going solar with a great deal of news attention. They may have foundations that would be interesting in supporting this type of effort.

Two that come to mind are Target and Kohls. I know Target makes a point of stressing its grants to local communities. Given the philanthropic spirit of Senator Herb Kohl and the Kohl family, I would not be surprised if Kohl's Department Stores (now a publicly-traded corporation) does not have a similar program. A search of "solar energy" and the names of either corporation will lead you to more information, which appears to be centered in California right now.

If your building has a flat roof and there is a maintenance person on staff or landscaping service that you could hire, rooftop gardens are popular in certain large cities. I've read several articles about buildings in Chicago that have been planting rooftop gardens as a way to reduce heat buildup on the asphalt and reduce ac costs. The State of Illinois Office building in downtown Chicago has been featured.

Sorry I don't have any references but a search of databases should turn up some articles published over the last couple of years.

Has anyone heard of or applied for grant funding for 'green' library improvements – whether this be something like grass on the roof or solar paneling or anything else for that matter?
