[Publib] Library newsletters; mailed or electronic?

As we are redesigning our newsletter, the question was raised as to whether any other public libraries are sending their newsletter electronically to their patrons (either emailing the document or notifying patrons that the latest issue is available online.) This would of course be voluntary since we would have to ask for email addresses for this purpose.
We currently mail our printed newsletter 7 times a year at a significant cost. While I don't think this will significantly reduce our costs at the beginning it has the potential to do so.
Is anyone sending their library newsletter electronically? How did you market this? What has been your experience? Any other thoughts? Responses will be put together in one "report" to the PUBLIB list.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
