Yes, there have been some political reasons but not for many years.  The conference you are referring to was an ACRL Conference.

The other main political reason for not going somewhere was a decision not to go to states that had not ratified the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment - for those of you who have forgotten the acronym).  

The third possible issue would be attending a conference or conference meetings in a hotel or conference center where there is a union strike.  ALA now writes contracts to avoid this situation without penalty to the organization.

These are the only issues that I recall since 1978. Before that I was not paying attention.

Wasn't there some politically oriented decisions as
well (for example, didn't ALA threaten to pull out of
Arizona because of the lack of Martin Luther King Day
