[Publib] Documentation and Dictators

I know I never read all the printed documentation that came with software in the old days. It tended to skip from the absurdly simple to the mind-boggling complex, leaving out the practical, middle ground that I wanted but when I did delve in I could usually find answers and solve my own problems.

Then documentation went online which was supposed to be more convenient and cooler, plus it reduced the clutter and the costs of converting trees to paper. I pretty much gave up trying to read it at that point. I lack the patience / eyesight to read long online documents. I can type 'em, but I hate to read 'em.

Besides online documentation and help, my employer hired more and more IT staff who decided that all us older users were mentally deficient. They also determined that the best way of justifying their numbers and their salaries was to by do everything for us - when they had time available from dealing with the really important organization functions of finance and revenue generation. For departments not perceived to be engaged in these crucial areas of a nonprofit, educational organization, the work waited.

Apologies for the rant but that's how it looked from my little corner of the world.
