Of course it's our responsibility to keep current.  As more and more continuing education classes are available online and affordable, it's easier now than it was twenty or even ten years ago when coursework in librarianship was only offered at library schools and required physical attendance.  

The requirements for the Certified Public Libary Administrator designation, available at http://tinyurl.com/2ut9hj, are one way the profession encourages continuing education.

I believe pharmacists, doctors, dentists, and attorneys are required to take appropriate continuing education courses in order to maintain their professional licenses.  (That's one reason I favor licensing or certifying librarians.)
