LIBRARIAN II *  YOUTH SERVICES MANAGER
 
DEPARTMENT:   Library * Youth Services
 
ANNUAL SALARY RANGE:  $46,841 - $61,235
 
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Youth Services Manager is responsible and accountable for the professional and supervisory work in planning, implementing and coordinating activities of the department, including selection of materials, supervising and training departmental staff, performing reference services in person, by telephone, mail, and electronically, providing for youth programming in and out of the library, and participating in library planning. Work is reviewed by the Library Director through reports, conference and results achieved.  Performs related work as required.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):
 
ESSENTIAL:
 
1. Plans, organizes and manages the work of the Youth Services Department
2. Maintains the collection in the Children's and Young Adult areas by selecting and ordering new materials, withdrawing and replacing worn or outdated materials and assuring that collection is useful and balanced for active community use
3. Trains, supervises, schedules, and evaluates Youth Services Department staff  
4. Interprets library policies to staff and patrons
5. Plans for and presents children’s and young adult programming and exhibits at the library; prepares promotional materials for activities in the department including news releases 
6. Continuously reviews and revises procedures for department activities; establishes goals and measures for the ongoing evaluation of library services 
7. Conducts library tours as requested
8. Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to children and young adults
9. Represents the library on school, business, organization, or agency cooperative projects 
10. Prepares and administers grant applications for projects that enhance the Youth Services program
11. Keeps statistics and prepares monthly and quarterly reports as necessary
12. Participates in the planning for library services, the budget process, and other activities through cooperation with all library Activity Managers and with the Library Director
13. Continually works to identify ways to increase awareness of, and access to, library materials and services
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
 
ESSENTIAL:  Knowledge of the mission, purpose and policies of the library.  Knowledge of good customer service principles with an ability to deal pleasantly and effectively with both the public and library staff as well as establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.  Ability to supervise employees and volunteers.  Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform a variety of tasks without close supervision.  Ability to plan and organize work for the accomplishment of objectives.  Ability to provide strong leadership to the department, challenge traditional ways of doing things and implement new and innovative ways of accomplishing department objectives.  Ability to exercise independent judgment and use resourcefulness and tact in solving problems.  Demonstrated ability to follow a management philosophy that is input oriented and values problem solving and the development of partnerships.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team.  A desire to be part of an organization that values service, people, integrity, responsibility, innovation and teamwork. Skill in the use of word processing, spreadsheet software applications, web searching and basic computer troubleshooting.  
 
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Possession of a Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited school of Library and Information Science and some experience in children's services in a public library at the supervisory level.
 
OTHER INFORMATION: Variable hours including some Saturday, Sunday and evening work is required.
