I'd like to add to Elizabeth Saxton's post that in my library a ringing cell
phone sends apologizing teenagers flying out into the lobby or out of the
library altogether so that no one is disturbed by the noise or their
conversations. My adults on the other hand, tend to share their personal
phone conversations with the entire building, often taking a seat at a
nearby table to make themselves more comfortable.

Can we please stop referring to "little Johnny" as if young patrons
are the sole cause of these problems.

I don't know about you, but we have many more problems with the
so-called "adults" who print endlessly because they don't
understand the process, can't be bothered to bring their library
cards to the library, treat us like clerks at Kinkos, and use the
numbers of friends to spend 4 hours on the computer in what I call
the "myspace coma".

My teens on the other hand work print preview, have their library
card numbers memorized, wait their turn for computer reservations and
often finish before their time is up. No, they aren't perfect, but
I'll take an 8-14 year-old who doesn't know how to act in public over
a 38 year-old with the same problem any day.
