[Publib] Time to bide VHS goodbye?

We still have a pretty good size video collection and circulation. Our
circulation on VHS really wasn't that much lower than DVD and I know
some of community still is using primarily VHS. I don't purchase VHS
any longer, but I still pull items that I believe will have a high
circulation out of our book sale. That way if they die, I don't feel
guilty throwing them away.

We are not buying VHS format anymore, even though they are much more
durable and repairable than DVDs. A few years ago DVDs were too
expensive but now they are cheaper than the tapes. We have not disposed
of our VHS tapes in either features or non-fiction and I don't think we
will do so for awhile. We are also a community where many people still
prefer VHS.

A quick search of walmart.com showed the cheapest VCR at just under 40
dollars, while the cheapest DVD player was just under 30.

You hardly have to be Richie Rich to experience the DVD format.

Oh, mercy! We wouldn't dream of getting rid of our VHS collections!
Perhaps in a more affluent area, it's not an issue, but we have *lots*
of patrons who still only have tape players and our DVD title list does
not yet nearly match the variety in VHS. We are, of course, only buying
DVDs now, but we do add donated tapes.

With new formats breathing down our collective necks, we're talking
about discarding (or selling off) our VHS collection. Anyone else done
this? What was the customer reaction?
