[Publib] Weekend Shifts

A certain amount of cross training helps for sure. But, I doubt anyone
there is cross trained to fulfill the director's duties when he is
unavailable. Also, I couldn't catalog anymore if my life depended upon
it, and the circ staff wouldn't trust me to register a new patron or
handle a lost/paid book transaction; I can manage a simple check-out or
check-in. Point being, if one doesn't perform these tasks on a regular
basis, you could conceivably wind up causing more problems than being of
help.

My two cents' worth.

The two degreed librarians, the library director, and the cataloger take
turns covering Saturdays. That way each of us only does one weekend a
month. We generally have one or two circulation clerks working with us.

We're a small library, so we all fill in at the circulation desk when
needed, too. A couple of the clerks do the same with the reference desk
when I am not able to cover it. We try to cross-train everyone to be
able to jump in at any station when needed.
