Hello all! Please excuse any cross-listings.

Some upcoming classes delivered from SOLINET:

Classroom Management Techniques for Librarians (Live Online)
Dates: 2/12/2007 - 2/13/2007
Time: 2-4 EST both days
Location: Online (Synchronous)
Description:

Librarians are teachers too, however, as library school students, we are not
exposed to the wide-ranging "toolbox" of classroom management strategies
that teachers have learned and apply every day.

This two day, two hours each day class will, through discussion and
exercises, introduce a range of classroom management, teaching, and
presentation techniques that librarians can use and apply in a variety of
settings to keep classes motivated and on task.

Getting Graphic: Sequential Art
Date: 2/13/2007
Time: 9 - 4 EST
Location: SOLINET offices in Atlanta
Description: Sequential art (comics, graphic novels and manga) is a vibrant,
growing—and occasionally controversial—field of publication, often appealing
to a demographic that might not otherwise be motivated to read. In recent
years, many libraries have begun to recognize the appeal of sequential art
as a rich and sophisticated genre, worthy of adding to their collections.

This full-day course offers an overview of different types of sequential art
and addresses issues of collection development, cataloging and promoting
sequential art in library collections, as well as strategies for dealing
with potential challenges from the public.

Practical Approaches to Information Literacy
Date: 2/15/2007
Time: 9 - 4 CST
Location: Lexington Public Library (KY)
Description: Information literacy is a fairly new term for concepts that
have been with librarians for ages—from "orientation" to "bibliographic
instruction" to "library Instruction." Rapidly changing technology, the
adoption of the ACRL information literacy standards, and the changing
attitudes of college students toward research require librarians to shift
from "BI" to "IL", and integrate information literacy concepts and standards
into redesigning instruction, rethinking research assignments, and creating
new kinds of instructional programming.

This full day class offers strategies for working more actively with faculty
and students to change library learning environments--both physical and
virtual—in ways that will more actively engage students in the research
process.
