My objection to naming the self check is that in our facility, they are THE 
place to check out. Our signs are nice design features, but no more than 
the labels for our videos and DVDs.

The circ services desk is not a place to check out. It is a place to pay 
fine, renew cards, etc. The 13% of the circ that happens there is from 
patrons paying fines or getting renewals and then we handle it there since 
that is the best service. Otherwise, we take the items to the self checks 
and do it there.

We eliminated our circulation desk and the new circ services desk is on a 
different floor. If you plan on doing self check, it is important to do it 
all the way. Otherwise, you are just nibbling around the edges and not 
making a real change. Can't jump half way across the river.
