As a tax supported unit of government (I suspect we all forget that we
are governmental bodies) a public library has no option to give special
treatment to anyone. We have an obligation to treat everyone within our
service area exactly the same way. You might ask your patron if he would
mind if the fire department left his burning house to go put out a fire
at the home of someone else who was a big donor to the firefighters
benevolent society.
