This is an important point, Dale, and everyone following this "story".
The original article in the Washington Post (2 January, pA1) included a list
of books to be discarded and left the inaccurate impression that the Fairfax
County Public Library was eliminating beloved, classic titles wholesale.
Not so. For the Library's response to the furor, see
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/classics.htm
The Miller article in the WSJ has misinterpreted the Post article and raised
a mountain from a molehill, evidently without consulting the Library. And
with what consequences for the journalists who promote disinformation???
And for the Library--notoriety and a cloud of suspicion among us? Such a
shame.

This conversation, though not new, is important.
. . .
My guess is that for every Hemingway or other literary author's work that
was weeded there were a good many more of Jonathan Kellerman or other
popular authors. . . . . I suppose my main point is that it's the
library's holdings that matter, not its withdrawals.
