"In truth, for the most part ALA and its divisions are run by well-heeled
administrators, elites whose participation is subsidized by their institutions.
Those institutions, alas, support and/or give time off to only a very small
portion of their staff to allow them to attend ALA conferences. The expenses
of ALA's top officers to attend meetings are paid by the organization, as they
should be. Councilors must pay their own way, however. That is a
considerable barrier for librarians and staff in the field's lower ranks."

Note: That's true. I'm unemployed, and I pay my own flights and hotel
expenses to go to ALA. Know how much it costs to go from L.A. to Boston? I'm
surprised anybody does this who has to pay his/her own way. This is an
interesting article and should be read and commented upon.
