"In truth, for the most part ALA and its divisions are run by well-heeled  
administrators, elites whose participation is subsidized by their institutions.  
Those institutions, alas, support and/or give time off to only a very small  
portion of their staff to allow them to attend ALA conferences. The expenses 
of  ALA's top officers to attend meetings are paid by the organization, as they 
 should be. Councilors must pay their own way, however. That is a 
considerable  barrier for librarians and staff in the field's lower ranks."

Note:  That's true.  I'm  unemployed, and I pay my own flights  and hotel 
expenses to go to ALA.  Know how much it costs to go from L.A. to  Boston?  I'm 
surprised anybody does this who has to pay his/her own  way.  This is an 
interesting article and should be read and commented  upon.
