What about in-library usage?  We scan materials left
about the library by patrons and count them that
way--perhaps not "circulating" but certainly being
used!  

The WSJ author appears to be quite elitist, doesn't
he?  It's ok to subsidize the tastes of some but not
others?  Interesting.
