[Publib] Adult Summer Reading Program

We did an adult summer reading program for the first time here last summer,
and I kept it very simple. For every book you read or audio book you
listened to, you got entered into a drawing for prizes that were given out
at the annual Friends of the Library barbeque (a free event they put on for
the whole community-there are benefits to living in a town of 351 people).
The main prize was an mp3 player (because the state library system had just
started offering downloadable audio books), and then we had some other gift
certificates to various local merchants. The prizes were purchased with
donations from the Friends and the county library foundation. People here
already give so much to the children's summer reading program that I didn't
want to ask them to donate again for the adult program, but several
merchants I went to to buy prizes also donated something. I put pamphlets
about the program (which described how it worked and talked about the
benefits of not only reading to your child but also of having your children
see *you* read) all over town, and 40 people signed up. They had the option
to sign up for a weekly e-mail about new books in the library, which was
popular enough that I've recently started doing it again. I also did some
themed displays.

I may do something slightly more involved this summer, but mostly I just
wanted to promote adult reading without saddling people with requirements.

If you have questions or would like a copy of the pamphlet or anything else,
just let me know.

Good luck!
Laura

Subject: [Publib] Adult Summer Reading Program

I need some fellow publibber advice.has anyone had a summer reading program
for adults? We are planning our first, and would appreciate any advice
(guidelines, ideas, suggestions, etc.) to help shape this a little bit. How
many titles did you require (or time spent reading per day), did you include
all formats, any suggestions for reading logs? Thanks in advance for your
help!
