This is the information Novelist gives on Louis L'Amour read alikes - - This
is the info I would print out for my patron, so they could try some of
these.
""Although he rarely ventures further west than Arkansas, Douglas C.
<javascript:jumpToURL('author=Jones,+Douglas+C.');> Jones, like L'Amour,
combines elements of both the Western and the Historical novel, with
historical accuracy and strong storytelling at the fore. These engrossing
stories of the settling of the west are filled with action and adventure
combined with a touch of humor, especially in the characters. They are also
marked by respect for Native Americans and their traditions. Try Shadow
<javascript:jumpToURL('author=Jones,+Douglas+C.&title=Shadow+of+the+Moon&tid
=036768');> of the Moon, which combines saga elements with the historical
details. Here, Jones explores the westward expansion with the Chesney family
from 1772 to 1827.
Award-winning Western writer Elmer Kelton
<javascript:jumpToURL('author=Kelton,+Elmer');> may not provide rough and
tumble action in every chapter, but he certainly shares L'Amour's view that
heroes need to settle and keep the law, not ride on when their job is
finished. The Western landscape also figures prominently in his stories of
the disappearing west. Try The
<javascript:jumpToURL('author=Kelton,+Elmer&title=The+Pumpkin+Rollers&tid=03
7733');> Pumpkin Rollers, the story of a young farmer who comes of age on a
cattle drive in this story of the changing west.
His Westerns may be few, but Alistair
<javascript:jumpToURL('author=Maclean,+Alistair');> Maclean, in his
thrillers and novels of military adventure, provides the non-stop action
that L'Amour's fans crave. His stories feature strong heroes -- and few
women -- who explore new frontiers and conquer their villains against the
backdrop of detailed landscapes. The
<javascript:jumpToURL('author=Maclean,+Alistair&title=The+Guns+of+Navarone&t
id=042187');> Guns of Navarone places a commando team on a crucial
Mediterranean island, where they must, in a matter of days, cross dangerous
enemy territory to destroy the German guns.
Like L'Amour, prolific Western writer Max Brand
<javascript:jumpToURL('author=Brand,+Max');> focused on action rather than
character. While his stories lack the extensive details of Western life and
landscape, readers who appreciate Western adventures might try his,
including the classic Destry
<javascript:jumpToURL('author=Brand,+Max&title=Destry+Rides+Again&tid=016819
');> Rides Again, a fast-paced tale of revenge.
On the other hand, Tony Hillerman
<javascript:jumpToURL('author=Hillerman,+Tony');> , in his contemporary
Mysteries set on Indian reservations, offers all the detail of landscape and
tradition, but his stories feature less physical action. His respect for the
West and especially for Indians, his understanding of traditions, and the
timeless feel of his stories may satisfy L'Amour fans, hungry for stories
that evoke the West, old and new. Try Dance
<javascript:jumpToURL('author=Hillerman,+Tony&title=Dance+Hall+of+the+Dead&t
id=034242');> Hall of the Dead with its satisfying mix of landscape, Indian
culture, and tradition.

Readers' Advisory Guide to Genre Fiction (ALA, 2001).""
ALSO - we just completed staff training here from Novelist on Reader's
Advisory "lite". It was very helpful, both in learning ways to use Novelist
and also for my para-professional / non-professional staff to get the feel
for reader's advisory. I highly recommend it.

Subject: [Publib] Louis L'Amour Read Alikes
I have a patron that reads nothing but Louis L'Amour westerns. I know about
Zane Grey and Max Brand, but who else would be good?
Thanks in advance for your help.
