We are using display shelving for a year plus of our new fiction and
non-fiction and we very much continue to need Dewey. We are currently
displaying 15% of our fiction and 8% of our non-fiction on the Adult side.

For permanent displays (Business, Home and Garden, Crafts, Hot Topics) you
still need Dewey. We use the top 2-3 shelves for face out display and the
remaining shelves for Dewey ordered shelving. We need to be able to find
items in our display collections, since they are listed as being in the
display collections in the catalog. Not only are patrons looking for them,
we do a lot of pick list / delivery and need to be able to find our newest
/highest demand items without spending a lot of staff time.

Also, permanent (as opposed to seasonal) displays are more general, so that
in the business books, it still makes sense to keep the small business
titles clustered, as well as the real estate, job search and finance
titles. In the Hot topics, Dewey keeps the climate change, political and
celebrity titles clustered, just as Dewey wanted.

In our fiction displays, we keep all the non-face out titles in
author/title order for the same reasons.

Adapt all the business ideas you want, just don't adopt them.
