[Publib] Children's book banned?

Outraged? You bet I am. Since when is teaching kids the correct word for
something a crime? And won't approximately 1/2 the readers of this book
have a scrotum of their own? How about if we just ban this book from little
girls?

Hello, Jessica Simpson-thankfully you are not THAT Jessica....is it just me
or are
you outraged that in 2007 such a word would lead to so much trouble???

I am a library student at Long Island University, Palmer School, and new to
all of
this library stuff-but I, myself am not new - a returning student, I like to

say. Just
wondering what the professionals are thinking!

Herrick has two buildings, 72k sq ft and 5k sq ft.
Combined we have over 130 pcs. There is myself, Head of Technical and
Automated Services and one lib asst II who provides the actual support. I
plan, schedule, etc. We just migrated to a new server and switches so I will
get additional training. So we have two full time staff, really 1.25 fte.

In March of 2006 we added my position, Deputy Director/Systems Librarian. I
am in charge of all the technology for the library system. This is 6
branches over 300 square miles. Our population is around 55,000.00 and we
have 48 Public Access Computers and 31 Staff/Circulation computers. I am
way overloaded with these duties in addition to those of Deputy Director.
But I do have some help as the staff/circ computers are managed by the IT
staff of our consortium as is our ILS. I believe our library system needs a
dedicated IT staff person.

>>Has anyone in library land done a survey when you are moving from one
structure to a
newer, more modern one?

We did our first (now biennail) Service Survey precisely because the library
had had a large! addition put on it, the whole old gutted and modernized,
etc. We wanted to see both what the public thought and if they knew about
all the new services/places available to them in the new facility. (They
didn't.) We always administer survey both in tree-base (aka, paper) and via
SurveyMonkey (tho' online returns have fallen steadily with each of the
three surveys.)

2002 Survey info http://www.mclib.info/results.html
2004 Survey http://www.mclilb.info/survey/

In non-stop attempt to inform public about the utter coolness of their
library we've also just begun a podcast feed of selections from our music
concerts and put up a video tour of the facility.

Pamela,

I absolutely think a library of that size should have a dedicated IT
person. I have been in IT in public libraries for about 6.5 years now.
I worked in a public library serving a community of about that size,
although we had closer to 75 or 80 computers in total. I and one other
IT person supported the technology there - though I also have an MLIS,
so I worked reference and did other things there too. Currently, I'm at
a library serving a larger community (close to 100,000) and we have
about 150 computers and a dozen servers in total. I am the IT Manager,
and I have 2 part-time people that help support the IT there, and I
could use more help at times. We do use a consultant for special
projects.

Technology in libraries is critical to the success of the library in
this day and age. And the use of technology in libraries is
specialized. We have public customers that come in every day and get on
our network and use our resources. And our customers are demanding
about the technology support they want. We need to provide support for
the latest and greatest technology without compromising the security of
our own networks. We need to be able to manage the computers and the
networks from a central location and have the right tools for the job.
The technology needs to integrate with our library's ILS...and on and
on.

There are just so many components to effectively managing technology in
libraries, especially public libraries. I'm a big advocate for having
the appropriate staff to support your library's technology.

My 'title' in our library system is Patron Technical Assistant (am I the
only
one - or are there others out there?). What is funny is one line in the job
description I was given - let the library technician (aka cataloguer,
finance, supplies, etc) know if something computery breaks down. However, I
am basically network manager/tech co-ordinator in all but name! I am
responsible for about 40 public & 20 staff computers over 2 libraries & 1
bookmobile (which has pesky satellite internet on it - I've been fighting
with it for too long!) serving about 50000. If something breaks - I get
called. If the director hears a tech buzzword - I investigate. If we need
new
equipment - I buy it. When it arrives - I install it. I also am the library
webmaster, teacher of computer classes, situated at the reference desk (with

a fairly busy phone!), internet room babysitter...... the list goes on. I am

full time as far as hours go - what happens in that time varies from day to
day!

Ah, Joe ......... look what you've done.

Okay, we're busted. Syracuse's cover as the underground karaoke capital of
the world has been blown, and Syracusans everywhere (which, uh, would be in
Syracuse, actually) are reeling from the shock of having the lid blown off.
Our felonious ways have been exposed to the scathing gaze of the world.

Well, we're not cowed ..... we're loud and we're proud. No dirty private

out off-key renditions of contraband crooning. We do it in the shower, we
do it on the highway, we do it in the workplace, we do it in the
marketplace, we do it in pubs, we do it in tubs, we do it at WinterFest, at
the Jazz Fest and at the Blues Fest; we do it at the Italian Fest, at the
Octoberfest and at the Irish Fest; we do it at Juneteenth and at the Duck
Race and at One Park Place, we do it uptown, downtown and midtown, we do it
at the skating rinks, the nature centers and the ski hills; we do it at the

Oh wait ..... Syracuse has a karaoke bar?

I second everything Karen says below and I would like to add that if we only

had more staff we could really shine! Right now we have no way to offer
training to our customers and we can barely do it for staff. There are so
many programs I would like to have at our library or even take on the road
but there is only one of me and so little time. Technology in libraries is
only going to grow and I believe that for libraries to stay relevant and be
the heart of their community (that is my personal goal for our library), we
must evaluate, offer and train in technologies.

It seems that starting librarians in Virginia's Blackwater Regional Library

System are paid the stunning salary of $21,280. ALA Councilor and ALA
Presidential Candidate Jim Rettig has sent a letter of protest to the
Newport News
Daily Press. You can read the letter here:

In his letter Rettig mentions the new minimum salary level for librarians

Hello,

I am an MLS student at Southern Connecticut State University, and am
currently enrolled in Reference and Information Services.

We are currently studying the reference interview process. This is my
first exposure to remote reference services and I was curious as to how many
"small" public libraries offer virtual reference services, how difficult it
was to establish the service, and how successful the service is.

Any information or anecdotes you have to share would be greatly
appreciated. If you have statistics on how frequently the service is
utilized, and the types of questions (ready vs. research) you receive, that
would also be helpful.

         Thank you for your time.

Dear colleagues:

I have the compilation of your submissions, but it is 30 pages long.
The moderators have suggested that I put in on a website somewhere,
but I don't have one, so if you can accept email pdf attachments,
send me an email with "Request EverydayReferenceQuestions" in the
subject line, and I'll send it back.

Thanks for your help.

The saddest thing is that it's the librarians who want to ban it. Are we
soon to ban any medical word referring to the human body? Scrotum???? Geez,
who are these people anyway?

Up there with the librarians who colored pants on the kid in In the Night
Kitchen.

Raab Associates will host a web based seminar,
Mastering the Maze with Roxie Munro on Friday, April
20, 2007. The program begins at 11:00 a.m. EASTERN
TIME; 10:00 a.m. CENTRAL TIME, 9:00 a.m. MOUNTAIN
TIME, etc. This online training program allows
library youth services staff to learn at the
computer.

Fees and Registration:
Cost is $50/person with discounts for groups of 10 or
more.

Contact: info at raabassociates.com or visit
www.raabassociates.com/webinars.htm

Roxie Munro's online seminar will explore how to use
mazes in challenging activities that foster creativity
and build problem-solving skills. She will discuss
their fascinating history and explain how to create
several types of mazes to use in library programs.

Roxie Munro is the acclaimed author/illustrator of 27
books for children including:
Mazescapes; Amazement Park; The Inside-Outside Books
of New York City, a New York Times Best Illustrated
award-winner; Libraries; Feathers, Flaps & Flops;
Gargoyles, Girders & Glass Houses; The Great
Bridge-Building Contest; Circus; Mazeways; and Rodeo.
She also creates oils, watercolors, prints, and
drawings, primarily cityscapes, which are exhibited
widely in galleries and museums. Fourteen of her
paintings have appeared as covers of The New Yorker
magazine.

Authors as Experts are one-hour web seminars provide
continuing education courses for public and school
librarians. They can also be adapted for teacher
groups upon request.

Each we seminar includes a 45 minute program given by
an author who is expert in a particular topic area and
specifically designed to aid in planning children's
and family programming at libraries. Topics have
included science-based activities, theater arts,
rhythm and rhyme storytelling, and presenting picture
books with challenging content. Presenters also answer
questions provided by the hosts and seminar
participants.

The hosts are Jeanette Larson, former Youth Services
Manager at Austin Public Library and a library
consultant for publishers; and Susan Raab, President
of Raab Associates Inc. Joan Honig, formerly of
Pro-Act Technologies is technical consultant.

What attendees said about previous Authors as Experts
Web Seminars:

This was a thoughtful and well-prepared presentation.
I only wished it was a little longer.

I thought this one was great. While I said the length
was perfect, I could have listened to this topic much
longer and not been bored!

I learned a lot that I will be able to incorporate
into my story times and be able to use to teach my
kids.

If you're in the St. Louis area Feb. 23-25 check out the St. Louis Stamp
Expo
[ http://www.regencystamps.com/PressRelease/20070124.htm ]. I will have two
exhibts of postal librariana on display [
http://www.libraryhistorybuff.org/philatelicexhibit.htm ]. The library
historical exhibit has a substantial portion devoted to the history of
public libraries and their predecessors and how they used the mail. The expo
is great fun with hundreds of exhibits and stamp dealers plus a special
historical display on the history of the St. Louis Fire Department which is
celebrating its 150th anniversary.
