[Publib] collection development standards

Have you looked at The CREW Manual? The version published by ALA is titled
Evaluating and Weeding Collections in Small and Medium-sized Public
Libraries : The CREW Method, by Joseph P. Segal. ISBN 8389-0314-2

It is well thought out and covers the entire process of continuous review
and evaluation. There are charts in the back by Dewey category that
recommend how old/how long since last circulation an item should be kept.
I've used it in libraries of all sized and found it a great guide. The
biggest objection I've heard about using it with very small libraries is "if
you follow it too strictly, you'll leave nothing on the shelf."

The answer to that is each librarian has to use it in context with his/her
situation.

Subject: [Publib] collection development standards

  Happy Friday!

Does anyone utilize collection development standards that indicate how
many times an item should circ according to broad Dewey or genre
classifications? Or, if you don't do this, what DO you do to establish
standards that aid in collection development? Thanks, Elizabeth
