Nope. The only restrictions we have on cko by minors is for those whose
parents elect to have a "Restricted Juvenile" card issued to their
child. That card restricts the holder to checking out only items from
the Children's Department. Depending on your automation system, you
might be able to do something similar. We could, for example, create a
new card type that would not allow cko of movies from the adult
department, but would allow cko of all other materials if we so chose.

Subject: [Publib] Questions about circulating DVDs to teens
Does your library circulate DVDs to teen patrons?
If so, does it restrict them by rating? Why or why not?
If you do restrict them by rating, what do you do about WILDER, CRAZIER,
UNCUT AND UNRATED editions that seem to be so common these days?
We're in the midst of re-examining our policy about circulating movies
(which, to date, has been 'adults only, period'). Movies are the only
material we restrict by age (which is to say that the same kid who can't
check out Air Bud can check out, say, The Guide to Getting it On or
maybe a Laurell K. Hamilton audio book).
So far, the options we've considered include:
1. Not changing the existing policy.
2. Circulating all movies to all patrons of all ages (not happening, too
much resistance) 3. Circulating all movies to all patrons over 13 (faces
a great deal of resistance, but potentially not impossible, hence this
poll) 4. Going over the entire DVD (and VHS, we still have those)
collection and assigning new collection codes based on rating, then
adding at least one new patron type based on age, then tracking down the
patrons whose ages would put them into these age groups, so that patrons
of certain ages can only check out movies of certain ratings.
Is there another option that we haven't considered? Does it work very
well?
Thanks,
Will Porter
