[Publib] Help! -Creating Buzz for Books

I'm glad you asked me for the answer to Question 1:"What happens when, through Hawking Radiation, a black hole has evaporated to a mass below that which was critical to form it? " rather then question 4 "Who was Postmaster General under the Harding Administration". Because if you had asked me me for that I would have been at a loss. And it made me realize an important point, when asking the questions on the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew handout, you should know the answers to the questions before asking them. Sorry about that.

By the way the answer to your question is:

  "Actually a black hole keeps evaporating, slowly at first, then faster and faster until it is emitting energy like a white hot speck. For instance when a black hole has evaporated to a thousand tonnes of mass, it has only 84 seconds left of lifetime; during that time it will radiate the energy equivalent of 1000 tonnes of mass in an exponential fashion. Basically the black hole at this point becomes a massive bomb.  Have a look at this calculator;
 http://xaonon.dyndns.org/hawking/
 this will tell you how long any particular black hole will last (if current theories are correct). "

  The Problem:
 What do I do with all the Hardy Boys and the Nancy Drew?
 They don't check out but once or twice a year and we have
 a lot of shelf space devoted to them.
 Is there a way to interest kids? Do I discard them by pub date?

 Create a series of 1 page handouts on the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew books. The handouts should be fun and nonsensical. They will hopefully bring attention to the books.

 Effective Immediately You must answer at least 3 of the following 5 questions correctly before taking out a Nancy Drew or Hardy boys book

 1-What happens when, through Hawking Radiation, a black hole has evaporated to a mass below that which was critical to form it?
 2-How long do you boil a 3 minute egg?
 3-what was the color of George Washingtons white horse?
 4 Who was Postmaster General under the Harding Administration
 5 What was Nancy drews first name?

 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

 For maximum effect place the Handouts where you normally place flyers AND give them to the kids as they check out their books

 Use a new handout every week/other week(?)

 The wriiten permission might be a bit much, but on the other hand the purpose of this idea is to get the books noticed.

 On the bottom of each flyer place a notice

 Be sure to register for the
 Nancy Drew /Hardy Boys Treasure Hunt
 Limited space, sign up NOW

 The technique should work with ANY item you want to bring attention to with one cavet:

 The Harry and Bert Piels beer commercials done by Bob and Ray in the 1950's were great at getting people to try Piels beer there was only one problem, the stuff tasted horrible, and though Harry and Burt could get them to try it once, most never went back again. So use this technique only with good stuff

    Kathleen,

 Maybe you could do a readers theater to interest kids, or run a program or contest to generate circulation. My 9-year old step-daughter read her first Nancy Drew and now she's addicted to the series. She especially likes the ones with "retro" illustrations, so I wouldn't necessarily discard them by pub date.
