My city used to provide cell phones to staff that were determined to
need one. Staff were supposed to use the phone for city business only or
reimburse the city for private calls. The finance department decided it
was too complicated and had concerns about privacy since the phone bills
and call logs were public records.
Now the city pays an allowance to those staff who are determined by
their department director to need a phone. I receive an allowance of $50
a month. Since my cell plan is $49.95 a month, that works out for me.
