[Publib] brief hello to PUBLIB folks

For those of you wondering why some academic librarian is spamming the lists
:) I should re-introduce myself as one-half of the PUBLIB editorial team.
(I'll leave it up to Sara to post her own reminder-hello... we're the long
and the short of it, as you would know if you ever saw us together, and *how
many of you have seen us in the same room, huh?*)
I've been active in PUBLIB since 1992, and in 1996, with Sara, took over as
co-moderator from John Iliff (a good person who died far too early) and Jean
Armour Polly (one of the earliest champs of the 'net and still out there
doing her good stuff).
You can still reach me at my personal email, kgs at bluehighways.com ... Sara
and I are always glad to help. We pride ourselves on the personal touch.
I took over PUBLIB when I was directing a special library, moved on to
direct a tiny Barbie Dream House library in upstate NY, then on to be a
systems librarian at a mid-size PL outside of Albany (yay for your new
building, Clifton Park-Halfmoon!!!), then managed a web portal, Librarians'
Internet Index, for five years (managing people, the project, the software,
etc.), then relocated to Florida with my partner, closed on a house on a
Thursday afternoon, interviewed for a job on Friday, and the next thing I
knew there I was in something new again.
And you know: it's all liberry work and it's all very similar and you really
need to be a little crazy to do it! (Except now I manage all techs, and
that's extra fun. I have a new videoconferencing unit sitting on one table
in my office, waiting for me to play with it, and every time a team member
walks in, their eyes glitter... "Oooh, shiny," they murmur, "Want to play."
My kinda people!)
Anyhoo, I apologize for not being more on the ball with our get-together in
Seattle. I was new on the job, I had a conference BEFORE ALA, and even
though Marilyn Sheck had done the legwork, I had trouble following through,
which some of you know is not my style.
I am getting stabilized in my new job, but I have to warn you June is a
perfect storm for me, with three important conferences as we get ready to
upgrade our ILS. I would really like to see us all get together at ALA-and
unlike Midwinter, where I showed up in Seattle at 9 p.m., I can make a point
of being there-but I'm gonna need help to the tune of finding a nice
smoke-free place near the convention center, putting out the call, putting
out the call eighteen more times, and handling any last-minute emergencies.
(We have had several funny emergencies at PUBLIB parties!)
Anyway, hello to new people and old!
