Emily,

I was intrigued by your statement that you don't lend DVDs, et al.

I went to the library website
(http://www.wakegov.com/libraries/default.htm) and looked in the
catalog. There are instructions for "finding a book," or "requesting a
book." There is a tab to look up audiobooks. I tried searching for a
couple of famous movies and got nothing.

So: does the Wake County library system (serving 748,815 people) really
not have *any* AV, other than audiobooks?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is curious about that decision, how
long ago it was made, why, and what patron reaction has been.

Thanks for the enlightenment!

At my library we have a $10 total fine cap, excluding lost items-- e.g.
if you have $50 in fines and a lost book worth $20, you have to pay a
total of $30; if you have $50 in fines and no lost books, you have to
pay $10.

I suspect this policy works, to the extent that it does, because we
don't lend DVDs, videos, or music CDs, and because the library system is
large enough that we never order just one copy of a book; if it's worth
ordering, there will be at least 6 in the system, so books usually get
to people in a reasonable amount of time even without intimidating
fines.
