I was surprised by this too...when I Googled it I found it rated all
over the place. Grade 4+, Reading level 7.2, Lexile points 1000...how do
people make sense of all of this? According to the Lexile Points system,
it is at an 8th grade reading level (8th grade falling in the range of
900-1150, apparently). Also Flesch/Kincaid Reading Level 8  (whatever
that is), interest level 8-12, on a recommended reading list for Grade
8's from a school in New Jersey, and level Z....????? Apparently it can
be rated whatever you want it to be.

I had an unusual problem over the weekend. A parent called to say his
child had to read a book for a book report. The book had to be an 8th
grade reading level. The child wanted to read "The Hobbit, or there and
back again." The child's teacher said this book was not 8th grade
reading. I was stunned. I did not read this book until I was a junior in
high school (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) and I was a really
advanced reader (if I do say so myself). Lo, and <snip>
