[Publib] Public Library Displays

Hello all,

Recently our library has been emphasizing the 'brand'. That is, the Library's logo should be as apparent and recognizable as that of any major corporate brand. That is understandable, but it is trinkling down into library displays. There is a need to have all of the branches look the same making sure to emphasize the brand. One aspect of this change is evident in displays. Branches cannot use clipart or pictures of any kind, only words in a specific font size. How will such a display signage be of any use? Yes, the materials on display should merchandize themselves, but sometimes that extra colorful, picture takes the display to a new level enhancing its appearance to patrons. And, what about displays for children?

As a library school student working in a major public library to have that individual creativity restricted is greatly discouraging and disappointing. What is the purpose of reading articles about the significance of creating environments which foster curiosity and creativity in libraries and schools if in reality that means nil? It is all a matter of what is next? Do we not have brains?

Would anyone know of Web sites or listservs which discuss displays in libraries?

  Thanks,

  T. Porter
