There was a tremendous fire in the Library of the Academy of Sciences in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) in 1988, apparently one of the most devastating library fires on record:

But my search of Amazon produced no books on this event.  Ditto WorldCat.
I could have missed something, of course.

There are numerous works on the German siege of Leningrad from 1941 to 1944,
which in terms of loss of life was cerainly a great disaster.  Perhaps the patron
was recollecting a book about this?
