I have had many rewarding reference questions during my 25 plus years in libraries, but this was by far the most memorable.
Several years ago, a patron asked to see a certain yearbook in the high school yearbooks we have in our collection. When I retrieved it for him, I asked if I might help him look for something in it. He said that in the previous year his son had roomed with two boys from our area in college. He didn't know their names, just that this was the town they had come from. His son had died recently so he wanted to talk to these boys, hoping to capture some of his son's past. As we browsed through the book, he found the boys, and, much to my astonishment, one of them was my son. The other was his best friend. So I quickly gave him my son's address and phone number so that he could contact him. All three of them went to lunch together, and the boys shared their memories of the time they spent with his son.
