I am responding to the statement Joe Schallan made about the Seattle
Public Library.

"The article begs the question: How did it come to pass that an

architect was so indulged that he was allowed to design an unusable

building? A building that now, shortly after its opening, requires

$49,000 of internal signage?"

I have been in the library on more than one occasion as a librarian
visitor. While I do not "love" every detail of it, I find it a
fascinating library.

How best to sign a facility is always a conundrum. I have also been
involved in a number of library designs and some things that sound good
in the conception don't work in the execution. The fact that the
library, including the director, is willing to fully look at what does
not work and make changes is to me a good sign. Some of the signage
works well. The elevator locators, for example, seemed unique and good
to me$49,000 to sign a building of this size does not seem excessive to
me.

And I wouldn't call something that has been open for almost 3 years
exactly a new project.
