Protecting Privacy, Challenging Secrecy, and Standing Up for the First Amendment
The Campaign for Reader Privacy, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Banned Books Week, held a provocative panel discussion at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on September 28, 2006.
Ron Chernow, president of PEN American Center and Patricia Schroeder, president and CEO of the Association of American Publishers, hosted a distinguished panel of speakers: Barbara Bailey, Secretary, Library Connection; Peter Chase, President, Library Connection; George Christian, Director, Library Connection; Richard Esposito, ABC News Reporter; Mark Feldstein, Director of Journalism, George Washington
University; Janet Nocek, Board Member, Library Connection; James Risen, New York Times Reporter; and Brian Ross, ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent.
The Campaign for Reader Privacy was launched in 2004 to restore safeguards for reader privacy that were eliminated by the USA PATRIOT Act. Its founding members are the American Library Association, the American Booksellers Association, the Association of American Publishers, and PEN American Center.
