[Publib] Weeding

Outsource weeding? We have had pages pull books from the shelves based
upon some parameters, but our Librarians look at the book trucks and
"rescue" titles that we should keep. There are a few, inevitably, that
fall through the cracks and are not accounted for by a general set of
parameters. Then our Tech Services deletes the items we weed and our
Friends Group handles the sales.
Letting the whole process go to a company to follow automatically upon a
set of instructions without interventions ("rescuing") by Librarians and
allowing a company to make deletions from your database might be a bit
risky. --- I can recall some Librarians in Hawaii becoming enraged in
1997 when their administration moved to outsource selection to a company
(Baker & Taylor, I think) and bypass selection decisions made by the
local librarians. Weeding is also collection development. However,
good the parameters might be that you write up to guide the employees of
the company, they can never account for all eventualities and
exceptions.

Subject: [Publib] Weeding
Hi,
Does anyone know of a company that will weed collections based on
parameters a library provides??
Physically removes items from the selves, deletes the items from the ILS
and prepares the items for resale or disposal?
Thanks,
Nellie
