Be aware that FLSA specifically forbids employees from volunteering their
time to do normal job duties. If you are doing a one-time special event, you
can probably ask staff to volunteer their time without violating the law, but
if the event is part of a series or an ongoing program, volunteering is not
permitted for employees covered by FLSA.

You betcha. Now, the problem is, if you're salaried and genuinely exempt
under FLSA (as opposed to merely considered so by your employer) then you
aren't due any additional pay. On the other hand, if you are paid by the hour, or
if your pay is diminished when you miss time, then you should get overtime
over 40 hours--the feds don't do eight-hour overtime, and they are the ones
who cover public employees. For assistance call the local DOL or write me a
nice note promising free coffee and I'll help you put the boots to the boss.
Or something.
