[Publib] Mock book burning

I have never conducted a mock book burning, but one year we did burn some
books to use as part of a Banned Books Week display. We chose old things
that were too ratty to go into the used books sale -- missing pages, water
damaged. A staff member took the books home and scorched them up good in
his fireplace. He pulled them out before they were completely incinerated.
And his response? He told me that it was the most horrible thing he had
ever done, the image and the smell haunted him, and he would never do it
again. So be careful -- you may find that a "mock" book burning effects
(affects?) you just as much as a real one.

I had the idea of conducting a mock book burning for a program as part of
our library's "Big Read," which is centered on Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451.

I googled the phrase, and have of course found that it is not a unique idea,
but all I found were references to such events taking place, and I can't
find any reference to the specifics of how it was exactly carried out. I
saw at least one slide show that points to the actual presence of trained
firefighting personnel, which is obviously a Good Thing (TM).

Since I saw real fire in the photos, I'm obviously a rube because it looked
like things were really being burned. What makes this a 'mockery' of book
burning? Can anyone share how exactly they've done this?

TIA,
Mark

Hello all,
I was recently visiting a library that is thinking of disallowing the use of
MySpace because gang members are using it to share signs and hook up. I was
dismayed and wondered if anyone else has had this experience and, if so,
what you decided to do about it.
Thanks,
Deana

Hi Deana,

I have not had this experience at my library, but a major library system in
my area has banned myspace altogether for a similar reason.

Here are some links:

http://www.raleighchronicle.com/2007022617.html

There's a lot more information than this on the web; these are just the
first three Google hits.

Hi Joshua and others,

My library purchases games from Video Stop. We have ordered online and then
have to fax a copy of the order and our tax exempt sheet to the company each
time to have the sales tax refunded to us. Since we purchase only every
couple of months, I recently went to the store and bought them there and
they processes our tax-exempt status in store. We don't get any library
discount. We have tried purchasing games from the local Walmart, but the
store doesn't carry all the games we want and they sell out faster than
Video Stop. Good luck.

It wasn't for a program, but some fellow classmates of mine back in college
burned their textbooks during a party the night after graduation. They had a
metal barrel in to which they threw the books, some ripped pages out before
consigning them to the flames, all while dancing and singing and drinking
beer. After being told at the book store that most of my textbooks weren't
being used the next semester and weren't being bought as used, I wished I'd
done the same.
For your program you could make mock-ups of books to burn using newsprint &
fake covers of banned books -- you could even make it a teen craft/learn
about censorship project or you could actually burn withdrawn & damaged
books that would otherwise end up in land-fill.

Greetings,

We have a ning site that is open to everyone:

http://sllibrarians.ning.com/

and there are several good blogs that look at the process:

http://oedb.org/blogs/ilibrarian/2007/a-quick-guide-to-second-life-for-libra

The use of a listserv would seem to be a bit out of date

to discuss SL.

For the benefit of us who don't know what a "ning site" is, how about a
little explanation? What are the advantages and disadvantages compared to
a listserv?

Listserv is a great low-bandwidth tool. So, it has
quite a few advantages over Ning and SL if you only
have a slow dialup modem.

If you are using SL, you really need to have high
bandwidth, so the listserv advantages are irrelevant
to SL users for the purpose of describing SL.
Listserv is not, in and of itself, irrelevant. I
am using it right now.

Ning is a social networking platform developed by
Netscape founder Marc Andreesson and entrepreneur
Gina Bianchini that includes integrated blogs,
communication, video, photo, and discussion
modules.

For the benefit of us who don't know what a "ning site" is, how about a
little explanation? What are the advantages and disadvantages compared to
a listserv?
