POSITION TITLE:  Training Manager
APPLICATION PERIOD:

RATE:  $47,428 / salaried  40+ hrs/wk  (2007 Rate)

DUTIES:  Under the general direction of the Human Resources Director,
the Training Manager is responsible for the professional development and
management of training activities for the library workforce.  Oversees
the learning and development of KDL staff through collaboration with
senior administrators to support strategic initiatives.  Plans,
coordinates, and delivers training and developmental opportunities and
experiences ensuring all staff have opportunities for personal and
professional growth and development.  Conducts needs analysis studies,
conferring with leaders and stakeholders, monitoring trends and best
practices, and testing staff, to determine critical training
requirements for both new and tenured staff.  Develops a library
learning culture, promoting internal participation in training through
the use of a training resource center with access to online training,
webinars, and discussions with respective communities of interest and
existing partnerships (MLC, PLA, ALA, etc.).  Provides supervision of
the Technology Trainer, ensuring staff maintains technology related
competencies and that public computer training classes are meeting
public demands.  Compiles data and analyses past, current, and
anticipated training needs to prepare and manage the training budget.
Conducts post-training studies to assess the results and overall
effectiveness of various training initiatives.  Reports on learning
outcomes and key metrics in support of strategic initiatives.  Conducts
and coordinates training sessions with staff to promote position
competencies and service to customers.  Approves external training and
development initiatives.  Develops and revises position training
curriculum as necessary.  Provides professional coaching and mentorship,
promoting knowledge transfer to library staff with respect to career
growth, advancement, and professional fulfillment.  Receives clerical
support from the HR Assistant, leveraging efficiencies through the use
of the shared training management databases.  Performs other duties as
assigned.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:  The job requires a Master's degree in Library Science
from an ALA accredited college or university.  Four to six years of
professional librarian work experience including a minimum of two years
of supervisory experience.  Library of Michigan Professional
Certificate.  Ability to travel between work locations and related
places of business as needed.  Comprehensive knowledge and understanding
of the principles, methods and practices of public library operations.
The incumbent is also required to have comprehensive knowledge of the
policies and procedures of Kent District Library.  Considerable
knowledge of circulation materials, reference sources, databases,
technology offerings, and other tools utilized in the public library
setting to provide service.  Demonstrated management, leadership, and
aptitude necessary to plan and administer training and development
activities across multiple locations and multiple professional
disciplines.  Ability to work under general supervision with latitude in
exercising independent judgment and discretion subject to organizational
policies, procedures, and professional practices.  Interpersonal and
communication skills necessary to work with a wide variety of
individuals and establish working relationships with staff across all
levels of the organization.  Well organized with excellent written and
verbal communication skills.  Analytical ability to research
information; maintains statistical records and summarizes findings in a
written document.  Visual acuity, hearing ability, and physical skills
necessary to provide training and instruction.

Computer skills to utilize specialized applications and online tools for
the benefit of training and development.  Ability to travel between work
locations and related places of business as needed.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Generally will work within a normal office or
library environment, with minimal discomfort due to extreme
temperatures, dust, and noise.  Requires frequent travel between KDL
locations, and may include out of town travel for meetings and
conferences.  Work hours may be varied, including evenings and weekend
hours.  Occasional sitting/standing in one position for extended periods
of time.

 

HOURS AND LOCATION: KDL provides library services to our local
communities seven days per week. All positions may require some evening
and weekend hours, including Sundays.  While this position is currently
assigned at the above location, KDL reserves the right to require all
employees to be available for assignments at any KDL location.
