POSITION TITLE: Teen Librarian (union)
APPLICATION PERIOD: 

LOCATION:  Grandville branch
Beginning: November 30, 2007   

RATE: $18.86/hr with benefits                 Full time 40 hrs/wk

DUTIES: Plans, organizes, implements, supervises and evaluates services
to teen library patrons.  Participates in the development and
implementation of goals, action plans, policies and procedures.
Initiates, plans and conducts a variety of programs and activities to
encourage the library usage by teens and children.  Acts as advocate for
teens and teen services, collaborating with schools and community
agencies.  Involves teen patrons in planning and implementing services
for their age group.  Evaluates, maintains and discards collection
materials focusing on teen patrons, based on professional judgment, teen
preferences and needs, and acknowledged review sources.  Provides
readers' advisory, reference and information services.  Duties include,
but are not limited to: receiving and answering of questions regarding
collections, library services and policies; interpreting patron needs
and conducting research necessary to obtain sources of information;
obtaining copies of information through inter and intra-library loans;
assisting patrons in the use of subject specialty materials; and
recording reference statistics as needed.  Instructs and assists patrons
in basic technical support, maintenance and troubleshooting in the use
of various electronic resources, online catalog, computer hardware and
software, as well as other library equipment and tools.  Contributes
information relevant to teen patrons to be included on the KDL website
and for display in the Teen Services area at the branch (pamphlets,
flyers, etc.).  Promotes, publicizes and represents teen services and
the library to the community and local agencies in cooperation with
other library departments.  Works with library administration to seek
supplementary funding to enhance library services for teens, including
local, state and federal grants.  Provides training and guidance to teen
volunteers.  Pursues professional development by serving on KDL
committees, and attending meetings, workshops, and conferences to remain
current in the field of teen programs, literature, audio/visual
materials and electronic resources.  Provides circulation services and
adult services, as operations require.  Performs other duties as
assigned.

 

REQUIRED AND DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Master's degree in
Library Science from an ALA accredited institution.  One year of
professional Librarian work experience preferred. Library of Michigan
Professional Certificate.  Ability to travel between work locations and
related places of business as needed.  Genuine respect for teens and
broad understanding of adolescent development (intellectual, emotional,
psychological and physical).  Ability to initiate and foster
communications, establishing rapport with teen patrons.  Working
knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods and practices of
public library operations, including searching methods, reader's
advisory and reference interviews.  Incumbent is also required to
acquire knowledge of the policies and procedures of Kent District
Library.  Considerable knowledge of available circulating materials and
basic reference sources.  Working knowledge of public library computer
hardware and software applications (e.g., on-line and CD-ROM databases)
and how to access and search them.  Ability to work under general
supervision with latitude in exercising independent judgment and
discretion subject to Library policies, procedures and professional
practices.  Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact
with various library staff and patrons in an effective and courteous
manner.  Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
Analytical ability to maintain accurate statistics.  Visual acuity and
physical skills necessary to retrieve library materials from shelves and
storage areas, maintain library materials and operate equipment.  The
incumbent is required to have the physical ability to push/pull fully
loaded book carts and lift/carry materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
Hearing ability to answer telephone and patron inquiries.  Computer
skills necessary to effectively access information on the computer.
Ability to operate a variety of library equipment including a computer,
fax and copy machine.
