Two weeks ago I was writing in the study and got a phone call that a friend
was coming over to deliver a gift. The doorbell rang a short time later and
I threw open the door. The dogs, expecting their friend (and friend's dog)
ran out and into a nice older couple who were proselytizing for the Jehovah's
Witnesses. Tulip went into her routine: begging and groveling; Rosie went
into hers: growling and jumping. The man decided to go into fright mode--he
presented a textbook case of what not to do in the presence of strange dogs.
Rosie bit his briefcase.

I was mortified, but recovered quickly. I accepted copies of the Watchtower
and Awake, then explained that we were a Catholic family and that the dogs
were taught to reject other religious beliefs, especially in the case of
religions which did not celebrate birthdays and Christmas.

Tulip and Rosie really like getting gifts on holidays.

You will note that Catholics do not come around to your house. The reason
for this is that they don't remember enough of the bible to quote anything
much. Most of them can't remember last week's homily.

Many years ago a pair of nice Mormon boys came to my old house while I was
changing the oil in my truck. They were from the midwest, and not from any
town like Pasadena, either. They asked if I wanted to hear a bible passage; I
said yes, but on condition that they give the King James version. We had a
fine little talk, and then I had them hand me tools while I replaced spark
plugs.

Mormons are always pedaling around Pasadena. I've given jackets to guys who
were told that it doesn't get cold enough out here to merit bringing a coat.

A confession: I used to be in love with a cute trumpet player in the local
Salvation Army band. I would stare at her beautiful blue eyes while the band
played on streetcorners during holiday season. The only problem was that I
my thoughts ran to sin, and that she never would have accepted that sort of
man. I lusted in my heart for the girl with the trumpet. Maybe it was just
the uniform. Karen, what do you think?
