If people have access to persuasive, passionate
writing they might start getting ideas of their own
and become controversial.
The next thing you know they will start getting
Googled, which rhymes with poodled, well I
should say -

Thanks. I think you just answered the question for me. Our selection policy
states: Strictly sectarian propaganda and tracts of an obviously persuasive
or solicitous nature will be excluded. Those items written in an
authoritative, informative and dispassionate manner will be preferred.
The booklet that was donated seems informative and dispassionate and now Im
just worried about its diminutive size. I think I will call the patron and
ask if she minds if we just put them out in the reading area for people to
look at instead of having them shelved with the big books and falling
through the backs of the shelving.

Lise:
What does your materials selection/collection development policy recommend?
If the publication is a good example of what the Jehovah's Witness religion
represents, by all means add it to your collection. You may want to contact
the donor to see if there is a more primary resource that would better fit
your collection.

I have a question for the collective brain. A patron donated a 200 page
booklet published by Jehovahs Witnesses called The Secret of Family
Happiness. It has an ISBN number and is in good condition. It is smaller
than a standard paperback and could be easily lost in the stacks. We dont
currently collect anything of this nature free tract material and Im
wondering what other libraries do. Would we be setting a precedent by
including this book in the collection? Our library is a popular materials
library. We try to have a good variety of religious materials, but do not
collect books such as hymnals and peripheral materials. Any opinions? The
patron who donated the booklet would like me to call her and give her
feedback. Im not sure if that means she just want to know whether or not
we added it or something more. If we decide not to add it, Id like to have
something concrete to back up that decision. Help!
