December 4, 2007
The Honorable Patrick J. Leahy
Chair, Committee on the Judiciary
D-224 Dirksen Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-6275
Dear Chairman Leahy,
On behalf of the American Library Association and the Association of
Research Libraries, we write in support of the Judiciary Committee
Amendments to the FISA Amendments Act of 2007. We believe this
legislation, as reported by the Committee on the Judiciary, constitutes
a positive and important step forward in reinstating and supporting the
public's civil liberties.
Libraries have a long history of protecting the privacy rights of their
patrons. We believe this principle of patron privacy must be maintained
while balancing and supporting our national security interests.
We look forward to working with you in the future on related legislation
devoted to protecting our Nation's civil liberties interests.
Sincerely,
Prudence S. Adler Lynne E.
