[Publib] Results of Signage/Area names request

Greetings,

I found the proposed staff names for the AV section interesting. (Please
note, I don't particularly like the term AV either) In the first name,
Entertainment Central, there is the implicit suggestion that books are
not for entertainment. At the very least, it doesn't tell you what kind
of entertainment is being offered. (Are there game machines in the area?
Chess boards?) The second name, Media Zone, also doesn't seem to be very
appealing either. Isn't a book just a type of media? So again, the name
doesn't seem to suggest what can really be found in the area. I know
there are easy answers, or else we wouldn't be discussing the question.
But those two names just don't seem to work to me.

Shannon

Thanks to all who contributed. We just finished a staff survey of the
names we were given and I'll share those results also.

First of all, the list of submissions and what I was able to mine
elsewhere. An interesting source was browsing through Flickr and
pulling a few ideas from there as well.

For the information desk (which is being changed to a stand-up rover
station) we had Ask?, Ask Here, Help, (Neon) ?, Ask Me, ?, JAM (Just ask
Me), Help-Help-Help, Please Disturb!

For the patron accounts desk we had Service Desk, Accounts, Front Desk,
Cards and Accounts, Book Returns, Issue Desk (UK), Customer Service.

For the new centralized AV area we had Audio-Visual To Go, Non Print,
Look & Listen, Media Zone, MultiMedia, Audiobooks- Movies-Music,
Movies-Games-Music-Audiobooks, Sight and Sound, Movies and Music. (I
have included hyphens rather than commas in these names to avoid
confusion)

Second, the staff survey. I chose to include the names I felt best
represented the primary focus of the areas. We had a pretty good
response rate (24 out of 30 staff).

For the information desk (which is being changed to a stand-up rover
station) = Ask Here

For the patron accounts desk (since we are going to self-check and do
not want to call it the check-out desk) = Accounts and Cards & Accounts
were tied

For the central collection of audio-visual materials = Entertainment
Central (34%) and Media Zone (26%)

For the Self-Check area = Express Check Out and Check Out were tied (8
each) with 4 suggesting Self Check Out as an option

So there you are. Thanks for all the feedback.
