Hi Ben,
We circulate DVDs, VHS, and music CDs for one week, no renewals. Fines
are the same as all materials, .10 per day. We max out at $25 or the
cost of the item, whichever is lower. We do not limit the number of
items our patrons can check out by format.
Hope this helps. It's been interesting to see the results of how
everyone handles this format.

hello everyone,
if it is not too much of a bother, i would like to survey the group to
find out what lending periods your libraries have for dvds.
1) How long is the lending period?
2) are there renewals? if so how many?
you may respond to me personally if you'd like, if others would like to
know the results let me know and i will consolidate and post them.
thank you much,
ben

Here is a test of your Green Library knowledge:
What is the best way for a library to maximize conservation of
resources?
1. Promote the purchase and use of alternative-fuel vehicles for
employee commuting.
2. Promote the purchase and use of electric no-emission vehicles
by workers.
3. Provide incentives such as preferred parking for workers who
drive less-polluting vehicles.
4. Provide disincentives such as less parking for commuter
vehicles except those involved in carpools.
5. Encourage use of public transportation by providing discounts
on passes.
6. Arrange library work hours to reduce commuting to a minimum.
7. Arrange library hours to times of peak patron usage.
Answer and discussion to follow soon.

Fort Worth Public library allows movies (fiction & nonfiction) to be
checked out for 7 days with 2 renewals unless the item is on hold for
another patron. Patrons can check out up 10 DVDs and 10 VHS items at
one time.
Up until April of 2007, movies were non-renewable and the limit was 5 of
each type.

Dear Publib'ers,
I am a newbie librarian and have been lurking on this list for a few
weeks in order to learn from your collective wisdom. Thank you for being
a vocal and generous-with-advice group. I now have a question to add to
the mix.
As a new librarian, I have been hired specifically to work with youth
and children, but have been given a choice -- I may choose to work with
"young adults" or with younger children (and I have a month or two to
decide.) I think that the children category is from toddler to about age
10 or 11 or so, and the young adult category starts at about age 12
through the teenage years... (though at times the boundaries between the
two groups seems to be a bit blurry.)
So far I am a few weeks into my new position and have been enjoying
working with both groups. Could you share with me your experiences with
working with these two distinct age groups, and your recommendations as
to which age group you would recommend choosing? And what, according to
your experience, are the pros and cons of either specialty?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Best,
Yesha Naik

I am brainstorming ways in which I could use my podcasting skills on
behalf of my library... One idea which was given to me by one of our YA
specialists is to interview youth and put those interviews up as
podcasts, specifically with the theme of immigration, since I work in an
extremely diverse area.
This I am definitely planning to do, but wanted to dream up of other
"out of the box" ways in which podcasts could be used... I guess one
could also use podcasting to work with local senior citizens to create
oral histories as well....
It would great to teach podcasting to the youth, (or to anyone who is
interested) but that seems like it would be quite expensive to do since
it would require each participant to have access to either a PC/mic
combo or at least some kind of digital voice recorder...
If you have used or currently work with podcasts at your library, can
you share the ways in which you have incorporated podcasting in
productive ways?
Or even if you just have a brainstorm to share, that would be highly
welcome as well!
Best,
Yesha Naik

>>we produce a printed newsletter that is distributed to our Friends
group.
Drop the (paper) newsletter and stick with electronic.
1) We have 12 people signed up for snail mail notice of library programs
and 600 for e-mail notice.
2) If you drop the newsletter (after one warning, in next issue) people
who *really* want/read it will let you know. You'll pare your list and
mailing costs down considerably. You could simply .pdf this, publish in
your web ..and only mail hard copy to ..? fewer than 50 people, perhaps?
3) Rather than use E-vance for $2,500 that we can't afford, I've just
rolled out Google calendar, in our web, for those who really want it in
that format.
http://www.mclib.info/calendar.html
Each of your 12 libraries could do their own ...or, among all that
number, perhaps you can run E-vance?
4) Set up an events blog and teach people how to subscribe to the blog
feed.
Yes, sounds like your current overlaps might be crazy making?!
