We use ANSCR (Alpha-Numeric System for the Classification of
Recordings). It assigns a letter to each type of music -- E for
orchestral, H for band, MJ for jazz, B for opera (wouldn't dare leave
that category out on this list). The second line of the call number
can represent the name of the composer or performer. The third part
of the call number is the first letter of each of the first three
keywords in the title. One example of this
system: http://www.calstatela.edu/library/guides/anscr_class.htm
This makes it sound much more complicated than it is. Because our
music collection is fairly small, we don't sort within categories,
and patrons are just happy to have all the rock or holiday music or
soundtracks in one place.
