Greetings,
There is a great documentary out about cradle to cradle design called
Waste
<http://www.videodetective.com/movies/WASTE_EQUALS_FOOD/trailer/P00769491.ht
m> = Food
In it, Ford Motor executives discuss redesign of the Rouge River Plant -
which had been an ecological nightmare - transforming it by using
sustainable technology into a place they would want their children to
play. Nike executives discuss the changes they are making to
shoes to make all parts non-toxic and recoverable. Furniture manufacturers
demonstrate similar paradigms.
I think the documentary is worth considering for anyone involved in
library design. As pointed out by Ford, the costs of sustainable design
were not only recovered, they actually led to more productive environments
and better profits.
It is time to rethink why we do what we do. Libraries have always
recycled and reused - one book can circulate many, many times.
By incorporating greener designs and purchasing sustainable products,
we can have more productive environments and better use of limited
funds.
