Robert,

As a student of Chinese I really think that the "ABC Chinese-English
Dictionary" by John DeFrancis is a fabulous resource. It does not have
English-Chinese; I find that with the East Asian languages, the best
dictionaries are unidirectional. It has Chinese characters and pinyin,
both traditional and simplified characters (although both are
provided, the simplified characters are considered the main ones).
I find it easy to use, easy to look up words and characters--I did a
lot of looking in a university library before I settled on a C-E
dictionary, and that was my favorite by far, especially because I
found it to use even as a beginner but it's a BIG dictionary and I
won't need a new dictionary until I'm much more advanced.
