Greetings Dean,
The part of your statement that is correct is that they "don't know how a
library might
be useful to them". They don't know.
One of the projects I worked on bringing into the public library system is
the MIT <http://enterpriseforum.mit.edu/>
Enterprise Forum <http://enterpriseforum.mit.edu/> . There are similar
programs for entrepreneurs affiliated with
other Universities around the US. Brown University
<http://www.brownep.org/> recently started one that
emulates MIT.
I was able to arrange for the MIT
<http://enterpriseforum.mit.edu/network/broadcasts/200709/index.html>
broadcast to be hosted at a local library. There
are some logistical considerations that need to be met - high speed network
access, projector, audio, good parking, and a large meeting room. Area
alumni and other interested
parties show up for the seminars and discussions that are world class. The
forum
attracts some of the brightest and most creative minds and can associate
the public library as a destination for doctors, lawyers, and business
people
that is useful to them.

Actually, it is because most doctors, lawyers and businesspeople rarely use
libraries because they either don't have the time or don't know how a
library might be useful to them and their clientele. You may wish to state
that the cause of the latter is "organizational impotency" but, for those
libraries that spend a great deal of time reaching out to these professions,
it is more likely professional arrogance. It runs across many professions,
it seems.
