Greetings Denise,
Can you explain why you were "horrified"? Why would the idea
of homeless people on cots in another library create that sort
of reaction? For me, it just triggered a thought about how
to manage custodial services around night usage.
And, why is Theresa using an analogy of Jesus being crucified
as a reason not to hire a social worker
<http://stats.bls.gov/oco/ocos060.htm> to help out with
homeless people or provide tutoring services?
Since then, He <http://tinyurl.com/3c4oo3> became immensely popular
throughout Italy
and the world <http://www.religioustolerance.org/christ.htm> , some of the
greatest architecture <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_(building)> in
the world was inspired,
books <http://www.eliyah.com/lexicon.html> were written, and He was
recently played by Mel Gibson <http://www.thepassionofthechrist.com/> .
Using the same analogy, hiring a social worker
would lead to immense popularity of library services, some of
the greatest architecture
<http://www.aia.org/press2_template.cfm?pagename=release_040607_AIA_ALA_Awar
d> in the world would be inspired, books
would be written, and librarians would be positively portrayed
in major motion pictures by major actors.

The two library directors seated on a bus in the row ahead of me were big
fish working in huge-pond-libraries. They were discussing the problem of the
homeless in their respective huge cities. I can still "hear" one of them
saying to the other, "We have huge libraries that are empty at night and we
ought to help these homeless by providing them with warm, dry places to
sleep at night. We could put surplus army cots between the stacks each
evening for them."
I am not making this conversation up; it actually happened. I was so
horrified that I have no memory of what response, if any, his friend--or
acquaintance--made.

Here we go again! Jesus Christ tried to be "all things to all men", and
look what happened. He got crucified! My library want to spend big bucks
on an online tutoring service to help kids after school with their homework.
Libraries have tiny budgets compared to other public agencies. In an effort
to be all things to all people, we constantly take on extra duties, hoping
that the general public and the city council or Board of Supervisors will
love us more, especially at budget time....
